Kootenay Lake ELEV8 Online Learning values providing flexible learning options for students so that they have optimal opportunities for success. Students may either enroll as an Online Learning student, or register as homeschoolers.
Enrolment as an Online Learning (OL) Student
Students may enroll as a K-12 online learning (OL) student. OL students are:
- Supervised by a BC Certified teacher.
- Required to complete BC curriculum standards.
- Issued a report card three times per year.
- Required to complete graduation assessments (FSA, Literacy, Numeracy).
- Provided with required resources for the educational program.
- Provided access to additional funds for activities and services to support the educational program.
- Invited to participate in group learning activities, should they be available in their location.

Registration as a Homeschooler
Students may register with an Elev8 program as a 'homeschooler'. Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching offered outside the BC provincial educational system. Typically, a family member delivers the entire educational program to children at home. Homeschooling programs are not:
- Supervised by a BC certified teacher.
- Required to meet provincial standards.
- Inspected by the Ministry of Education.
A Homeschooled Student may...
- Receive up to $125 in reimbursements for educational materials. Invoices must be submitted by May 31 of a school year.
- Have access to local activities with other OL students. A fee may be required which the parent will have to pay out of pocket or from the $125 reimbursement.
- Borrow educational resources from local SD8 OL curriculum libraries.
- Enroll in an Online Learning course at the Grade 10, 11, 12 level to receive credit on a transcript, for university entrance requirements.
- Write provincial exams, should they wish to, or need to, for university entrance requirements.
- Access evaluation and assessment services to inform parents of the educational progress of their child in relation to students of similar age and ability. A fee may be applied.

Cross-Enrolment Defined
Students in Grades 10-12 can be enrolled in more than one school at the same time. Our Elev8 DESK Secondary program accepts students Grade 10-12 students from other schools to (dual) cross-enroll in our courses.
A British Columbia student may cross-enroll to:
- Take a course not available at their school of record.
- Participate in a course outside their timetable.
- Allow more flexibility in their timetable.
- Experience a different learning format.
- Experience a course tailored to their interests.
NOTE: Students may not be enrolled in the same course at the same time in two different schools.
Grade 8/9 Students within district can cross-enroll at a cost of $600 per course to the School of Record.
Adult Enrolment
Students over the age of 18 may enroll with Kootenay Lake School District 8 Online Learning (Elev8) to obtain credits towards the BC Adult Dogwood Diploma and/or to acquire credits towards post-secondary applications.
Adults who have graduated (graduated adults) may take specific courses tuition–free under certain conditions.
Non-Graduated Adult
Non-Graduated Adult (students over the age of 18) may complete courses to receive credit towards the British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood) or the Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood).
To earn the British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood), the student must:
- Create a flexible and personalized graduation plan with a counsellor.
- Complete all courses required for graduation.
To earn the Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood), an adult student:
- Must obtain at least three courses after being admitted into the adult program.
- May carry over two eligible courses taken before they began the adult program.
- May take courses from either colleges or school districts or they can use qualifying courses from both systems and combine the attained credits to satisfy the Adult Graduation Program requirements.
Graduated Adult
Adult students who have graduated may take tuition-free courses. A tuition fee may be applied to courses not covered in the list of tuition-free courses.
International Students
Students living in British Columbia on a student (or study) visa may take SD8 online learning courses leading to a graduation program.
To enroll with Elev8 DESK, an international student must:
- Provide documentation of a student visa and permission to reside in British Columbia.
- Pay a tuition fee of $1000 for each course enrolled.
- Write at least one supervised course exam.
