Earth Science 11

Earth Science is the study of Earth materials, structures, processes, and its place in the Universe. The concepts, theories, and relationships with Earth Science are grouped into 4 groupings or disciplines:

Geology: Geology focus on the solid portion of the Earth. Rock, minerals and other natural resources are key materials studied. Geologists study processes that build and tear down natural structures such as volcanoes, mountains, sand dunes, rivers. Some geologists also study the how the earth formed and evolved to the present.

Oceanography: While geology focuses on the solid part of the earth, Oceanography is the discipline that studies the Earth’s oceans. Oceanographers study properties of ocean water, currents, and underwater structures. They study the processes that create underwater mounts, volcanoes, and trenches.

Meterology: Meteorology is the study of the properties and process of the Earth’s gaseous blanket-the atmosphere. Global winds, climate, weather patterns are some of the areas studied by meteorologists.

Astronomy: Lastly, astronomy is the discipline that study Earth in relations to the rest of the Universe. Astronomers study stars, planets, and other space entities. Further, astronomers study the origin of the universe.
