History of DESK

The Distance Education School of the Kootenays is part of a long and distinguished history of distance education in the province of BC. The Ministry of Education originally developed a distance education program in 1919 that grew and changed to include the establishment of DESK in 1989.

DESK has the mandate to deliver elementary and secondary programs within the regions containing the following School Districts:

  • #5 Southeast Kootenay,
  • #6 Rocky Mountain,
  • #8 Kootenay Lake,
  • #10 Arrow Lakes,
  • #20 Kootenay-Columbia, and
  • #51 Boundary.

Today, DESK is a distributed learning school, serving school-aged and adult learners throughout the province in programs that range from approved K-12 programs to Adult Education, workplace retraining, and special programs tailored to fit a wide variety of individual needs.
